Only a small number of immigrants from India came to live in Denmark. There are many Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka living here. The largest South Asian group in Denmark are the Pakistanis. Most are men who work in the product and service sections. The Imam of a mosque is Pakistani and there are some Urdu magazines.
More than four thousand Asian refugees came to Denmark from East Africa in the early 1970s. Later on many Sri Lankan Tamils came. When the first of them came seeking asylum in Denmark, they got support from the Danish government. The Tamils behave in a polite and reserved way. The later ones who came were mainly single young men. Most leaving Sri Lanka for Denmark have Tamil contacts already here. The newcomers when arriving become close to these contacts. The Tamils tend to keep to their own communities. The number of Indians living in Denmark is on the rise.
Many attend the burial when a Tamil person dies. A book of verses is delivered from Germany but they cannot find the person they desire to perform the services. Many Tamils use the Internet as do the Indians.
The first Pakistanis came to Denmark in the 1960s and 1970s as migrant workers. The Pakistanis in Denmark continued to grow in numbers. They get involved in politics more than other immigrant groups. Most Pakistanis living in Denmark are Muslims and there are many Muslim schools. The number of marriages among them in Denmark has become larger. They speak Urdu, Punjabi and Danish. Many live in Copenhagen and in Ishoj nearby.
