Introduction / History

Originating from the Rakhine State in Myanmar, the Rohingya people group continue their quest to adequately transform from Burmese refugees into Indian citizens. For centuries, the Rohingya people group has departed their home nation to assimilate throughout India with better opportunities not available in their home nation.

The Rohingya have contributed towards building previous empires throughout India's history, especially when India declared its independence in 1947 from England. The Rohingya refugee population has predominantly settled in such cities as New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Jammu. The Rohingya people group also are reported to have migrated to multiple nations outside of India.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Rohingya who settled within India have somewhat blended into the current ethnic kaleidoscope of different cultures and societies among native-born Indian nationals. Their acquired positions of employment primarily remains among the lower merchant class status within India's economic system. Common positions that the Rohingya have acquired with their limited resources include construction, and restaurant work. The government has not provided a pathway for Rohingya refugees to become actual citizens or residents of India. However, the Indian government has not granted asylum to most Rohingya people. Despite some members of the Rohingya people group receiving the grant of UN refugee access, the Indian government has become more hostile towards the presence of all Rohingya communities in India.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Nearly all the Rohingya people have carried their devotion across national borders by practicing the Sunni tradition of the Islamic religion. Accepted in mass by families when Islamic messengers travelled and shared what would become a minority religion in Myanmar, the Rohingya faithfully follow their beliefs. Mystical elements and folk traditional practices, in support but also at times in conflict with orthodox Islamic theology and methodology, have crept into the philosophy and implementation held by the Rohingya tribespeople observing Islam in India.

What Are Their Needs?

The Rohingya remain at risk at any time of detention and deportation back to Myanmar, as the Indian government technically considers all Rohingya people group as illegal immigrants, under the 1951 Foreign Act, rather than recognizing them as refugees. Documentation and eyewitness accounts have indicated that flights carrying Rohingya refugees away from India have forced passengers to jump out of these planes into waters belonging to Myanmar. With this confirmed act, India is committing nonrefoulement, a United Nations prohibition of deporting someone from a nation where that person is expected to face harm when returning to his/her home nation. This significant setback to the current and future generations, since the Rohingya cannot provide documentation that was never released by Myanmar, additionally prevents them to further follow the Indian government's regulation for needed documentation, as no documentation tragically guarantees no pathway.

Prayer Items

Intercede that God calls both national and international Christian believers to move and to share the gospel with the Rohingya, and that they will find healing and truth God's mighty hands.
Request for God to construct and strengthen church communities, so that disciples can arise among the Rohingya church leadership for bringing the gospel truths.
