Mahratta is an ethnic group in Western India that speaks the Marathi language. Unlike many other Indian language groups, they have only migrated to Australia and the United Kingdom, not various Western countries. The Maratha Empire was one of the last two empires in South Asia before the subcontinent was taken over by the British. Most of them came to the U.K. after WWII. They are now a normal part of British life.
The work and social life of Indians in the United Kingdom reflects a dynamic blend of professional achievement, cultural richness, and community engagement. Many work in IT, medicine, academia, and small businesses. Many Indians in the U.K. are skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and students who contribute to economic growth. Indian food, music, dance, yoga, and literature are now embedded in British cultural life.
Mahrattas join other Hindu peoples to celebrate festivals like Diwali and Holi, attracting diverse participation and symbolizing values like light over darkness and unity.
Mahratta Hindu households shrine called a devaghar with idols and pictures of deities that they worship. Some Mahratta communities read religious texts called pothis. Hindu Mahratta usually worship Shiva as their family god and consider Shivaji as their leader. Most revere their land and earth as their mother. Mahrattas fiercely defend their culture, language and history. This brings up an important point: Hinduism is an important aspect of their culture. Telling them to stop giving their allegiance to these gods is usually viewed as an attack on their culture.
The Hindu Mahratta people need the spiritual discernment and the humility it takes to recognize Jesus Christ for who he is.
Pray the Mahratta in the U.K would see they can enjoy abundant life if they put their trust in Jesus Christ.
Pray for the Lord to intervene in their families, calling people to his side and blessing them in every way.
Pray for loving workers to take Christ to Mahrattas in the United Kingdom.
Pray for their hearts to be drawn to the Lord of lords.
