The Brokpa of Bhutan speak a language called Brokkat. Men and women are treated the same and women often play the leading role in such things as marriages for their children.
Polygamy is acceptable to the Brokpa and steps take place before a couple are married. The parents of the bridegroom discuss matters with an astrologer before marriage takes place. Astrologers advise on death matters also.
The religion of the Brokpas is Gelugpa Buddhism and Ama Jhomo is a main deity. They pray to their gods for protection. They have festivals.
The Brokpa are partly nomads and live in a difficult climate. This could be an obstacle to the gospel. They raise yaks and sheep and sell dairy produce for a living. The wealthy have many yaks.
The Brokpa go to some villages swapping their products for food. They are connected to certain families in these villages for this purpose. Some Brokpa are poor and work as carpenters, blacksmiths and tailors for example.
Where Are they Located?
The Brokpa live in the Merak Sakten region of Bhutan.
* Pray that instead of consulting astrologers the Brokpa will come to Jesus Christ and let Him guide them.
* Pray that Bhutan will allow Missionaries into the country to give the gospel message.
* Pray for Salvation for the authorities in Bhutan.
Joshua Project data is drawn from many sources and of varying accuracy depending on source and editorial decisions. Populations are scaled to the current year. Other data may have varying ages. We welcome suggested updates.
A displayed zero can mean true zero, a very small rounded number or sometimes unknown. Blanks mean an unknown value.
The data is sometimes not as precise as it appears. Values for %Christian Adherent and %Evangelical (which determine unreached status) are often informed estimates, some more accurate than others. We recommend against using %Christian Adherent and %Evangelical to calculate absolute numbers.
Joshua Project makes every effort to ensure that the subject in an image is in fact from the specific people group. In rare instances a representative photo may be used.
