The Chagossians (also known as Chagos Islanders or Îlois) are an Afro-Asian ethnic group originally from the Chagos Archipelago, a chain of more than 60 islands in the Indian Ocean, including Diego Garcia. They are descended from freed African slaves, as well as workers of South Asian and Malay descent brought to the islands under French and British colonial rule.
Between the late 1960s and early 1970s, the British government forcibly removed the Chagossian population to make way for a U.S. military base in Diego Garcia. Many were relocated to Mauritius and the Seychelles, with a significant number eventually settling in the United Kingdom. Over time, Chagossian descendants in the UK have become politically active in seeking recognition, rights, and a possible right of return.
In the United Kingdom, Chagossians form a tight-knit diaspora community, with notable populations in Crawley (West Sussex) and Greater Manchester.
Many are now British citizens following changes to citizenship law which created a special route allowing Chagossian descendants to register as British citizens without a fee.
Life in the UK for Chagossians has been marked by both resilience and hardship. They face struggles around housing, identity, and preserving their cultural roots.
Organizations like Chagossian Voices provide a platform for the community in the UK to communicate, advocate, and preserve heritage. Through events, community organizing, and partnerships with advocacy groups, they maintain a shared identity and press for their rights, including recognition and citizenship.
The Chagossian people are predominantly Christian, with most historically identifying with Roman Catholicism due to French and later Mauritian influence in the islands. Some Chagossians in the UK also attend Anglican or evangelical churches, especially in areas where diaspora communities have settled, but the strongest cultural and family traditions remain Catholic. Their Christian identity is deeply connected to their experience of displacement, and faith often plays a role in sustaining community resilience, memory of their homeland, and the hope for justice and return.
The Chagossian diaspora in the UK has several urgent and long-term needs.
First and foremost, they continue to seek justice and recognition. Many Chagossians feel that their voices have been ignored in international negotiations over their homeland. Their campaign includes calls for a formal right to return, restoration of rights, and meaningful participation in decisions about their future.
Secondly, there is a strong need for social support. Many Chagossian families in the UK struggle with housing, employment, and integration. As newer generations settle, preserving cultural identity, language, history, and community memory is critical. Institutions like Chagossian Voices help, but continued support, both from within the community and from external partners, is needed.
Thirdly, legal and citizenship clarity is a vital need. While a new nationality route was introduced (in 2022) enabling descendants to apply for British citizenship free of charge, navigating this process can be complex and fraught. Some Chagossians report difficulties with documentation, recognition, and access to resources.
Finally, Chagossians need spiritual and pastoral care that acknowledges their experience of displacement, loss, and exile. Many in the community would benefit from church ministry that integrates justice, healing, and identity, helping them to sustain hope and community as they continue advocating for their historic homeland.
Pray for justice for the Chagossian people, that they would be heard in global and UK-level political processes and that their right of return would be honored.
Pray for strength and unity in the Chagossian UK community, particularly among Chagossian Voices and other grassroots groups, as they advocate for their heritage and rights.
Pray for God to open their eyes to move forward from the cultural difficulties and cling to the cross of Jesus Christ, to find peace and comfort in all circumstances.
Pray for evangelical teachers to minister to the Chagossian people so that they may learn and know about the Savior.
Pray that the Chagossian people would find peace through Jesus amidst all the trouble their people have gone through.
