Introduction / History

About four to five hundred years ago there were Japanese in Southeast Asia on a somewhat large scale for a short time. One of the communities was in southern Vietnam. The Japanese then integrated and intermarried with the Vietnamese. Some were Japanese merchants marrying with a prominent Vietnamese family, the Nguyen, which is the most common Vietnamese surname.

In World War II, Japan conquered Vietnam and had their military there until they were defeated in 1945.

Recently Japanese have come to live in Vietnam and particularly in the capital, Hanoi. The professional work is an attraction such as finance and manufacturing. Businesses such as Honda have come to Vietnam. Japan is the largest donor to Vietnam. There are Japanese restaurants in Vietnam.

Japanese language education has become popular in Vietnam.

The main religions of the Japanese are Shintoism and Buddhism. The Japanese speak Japanese and Vietnamese.
