Introduction / History

About four to five hundred years ago there were Japanese in South East Asia on a somewhat large scale for a short time. One of the communities was in South Vietnam. The Japanese then integrated with the Vietnamese and they married each other. Some were Japanese merchants marrying with a prominent Vietnamese family, the Nguyen, which is the most common Vietnamese surname.

In World War II, Japan conquered Vietnam and had their military there until they were defeated in 1945. Recently Japanese have come to live in Vietnam and particularly in the capital, Hanoi. The professional work is an attraction such as finance and manufacturing. Businesses such as Honda have come. Japan is the largest donor to Vietnam.

This century Japanese language education has grown in popularity in Vietnam. The main religions of the Japanese are Shinto and Buddhism. The Japanese speak Japanese and Vietnamese. There are Japanese restaurants in Vietnam. There are several Japanese companies that are investing in Vietnam.
