The word Kumhar means potter. Most of them are potters. Some of their items get sold abroad. Hindi is spoken by them. The Kumhar speak Marathi and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. They class themselves as lower status.
Their legend says that "once Brahma divided sugarcane among his sons and each of them ate his share, but the Kumhara who was greatly absorbed in his work, forgot to eat. The piece which he had kept near his clay lump struck root and soon grew into a sugarcane plant. A few days later, when Brahma asked his sons for sugarcane, none of them could give it to him, excepting the Kumhara who offered a full plant. Brahma was pleased by the devotion of the potter to his work."
The Kumhar are a lower caste community. Because of the persecution and oppression they have had to endure, they may be very highly suspect of outsiders.
Scripture has several references to clay and potters. Perhaps master potters or students of pottery can share the experience of working clay and teach what Jesus said about this occupation and how he likened himself to a potter.
It is unclear whether there are believers among them. Pray for a person of peace to present himself of herself.
Pray for unity among believers if they exist among them. Pray the group will grow in others' esteem for the importance of what they create.
Pray for peace among this community and that they will begin to have success in selling their products.
