Introduction / History

Most Bawm live in southeast Bangladesh, with many living in various places of Bandarban district but about one-third living in parts of Rangamati district. The Bawm live in hilly areas but some of their villages are in the valley. Others live in India or Bangladesh.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most of them are jhum (slash-and-burn shifting agriculture) farmers. Some of them are teachers, NGO workers, or pastors, preaching the Gospel to the Mru, to the Khumi, and to other ethnic communities of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Many grow rice, ginger, turmeric, vegetables, pineapple, oranges, etc. Additionally, they make bags, long skirts, shawls, etc.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all the Bawm call themselves Christian. The Bawm people speak their own language, and they have some written materials in their language such as the Bible, hymns, small books, etc. The literacy rate among Bawm speakers is nearly 100% in their mother tongue and 35% in Bangla.

What Are Their Needs?

They identify as Christian, but they need Christian growth. They need spiritual hunger. Their villages may be near roads, along riverbanks, or along the edge of the hills.

Prayer Points

Pray for a Holy Spirit-driven spiritual revival among the Bawm people in Bangladesh.
Pray for all to have access to Bibles and the JESUS Film.
Pray that soon Bawn missionaries will go to the unreached Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims in their part of the world.
