Introduction / History

The Sikh Sudh people in Punjab have a history closely tied to agriculture and traditional crafts. They primarily speak Punjabi, the predominant language in the region, and also use Gurmukhi script for religious and cultural purposes.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Sudh people live in rural villages and small towns, with a strong focus on farming and small-scale craftsmanship. They cultivate crops such as wheat, rice and various vegetables. Many Sudh individuals also engage in weaving, pottery, and other artisanal crafts, contributing significantly to their local economy.

Their diet includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, featuring staples like wheat, rice, lentils, vegetables and dairy products. Traditional dishes such as makki di roti (corn flatbread), sarson da saag (mustard greens), and various lentil and vegetable curries are common in their meals. Weddings among the Sudh are elaborate, involving Sikh rituals like the Anand Karaj (Sikh marriage ceremony), the exchange of garlands, and celebrations with music, dance and communal feasting. These events typically span several days and involve extensive community participation.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Sudh people practice Sikhism, worshiping one God and following the teachings of the ten Sikh Gurus as enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib. Their belief system emphasizes values such as equality, service, honesty, and humility. They observe numerous religious rituals and festivals such as Vaisakhi, Diwali, and Gurpurab (the birthdays of the Gurus). Daily practices include prayer, meditation, and community service (seva).

What Are Their Needs?

The Sudh people need better access to quality education to provide more opportunities for their children. Improved healthcare services are essential due to the limited availability of medical facilities and high rates of preventable diseases. Economic support through vocational training, modern agricultural practices, and sustainable craftsmanship techniques can enhance their livelihoods. Infrastructure development, including better roads, clean water supplies, and reliable electricity, will greatly benefit the Sudh community. Add

Prayer Points

Pray the hearts of the Sudh people would be stirred to hunger after God, to drink of living water.
Pray for family-based Disciple Making Movements to soon transform Sudh society, blessing them spiritually and economically.
Pray for the Lord to move in the hearts of believers to give up their own rights and sacrifice their lives to see the Sudh people blessed by the work of Jesus Christ, the only savior.
