Introduction / History
Panan are an ancient Tamil people and are mentioned in Old Tamil literature. Their age-old occupation is singing of hymns to Hindu deities. They were the main orators in the king's palace, and also acted as ambassadors.
What Are Their Lives Like?
Presently most Panan people live in the state of Tamil Nadu. They are also in Kerala State and in Sri Lanka.
Many Panan people work as tailors in the state of Tamil Nadu. They are also in Kerala State and in Sri Lanka.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Most Panan people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews.
What Are Their Needs?
Most Panan people are economically, socially and most importantly spiritually struggling. There is also a lack of understanding and unity among them.
Audio, visual, and written Bible resources exist in Tamil, their spoken language, however they do not have access to them. Disciples are needed to bring them to the needy Panan people so they can learn that Almighty God who created all things loves them infinitely and has provided the way for their sins to be washed away and forgiven.
