The Panan are an ancient Tamil people and are mentioned in Old Tamil literature. Their age-old occupation is singing of hymns to Hindu deities. They were the main orators in the king's palace and acted as his ambassadors. They were also dancers. They are scattered all over but the majority live in the state of Tamil Nadu. They are also found in Kerala State and in Sri Lanka.
Presently, some of them are tailors. Most of them are economically, socially, and most importantly, spiritually struggling.
The Panan people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.
Almost all Hindus participate in yearly celebrations like Holi, the festival of colors and the start of spring / Diwali, the festival of lights / Navratri, the celebration of autumn / and Rama Navami, Rama’s birthday.
As Hindus, they will not look to Jesus Christ to be their only source of comfort and spiritual guidance. They have a strong tie to the Hindu religious system which makes them reluctant to seek and find the only savior.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Tamil speaking churches that can reach out to the Panan people. Pray for them to act! Pray for outreach teams to visit them and make sure they have the JESUS Film. Pray they would know the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ. Pray there would be an increase in awareness of the teachings of the Bible.
