The Japanese ruled the Marshall Islands from the beginning of World War I to the end of World War II. After World War II, the Japanese had to return to Japan. Some mixed Japanese and Marshallese stayed and worked in business and politics. In the 1980s, the Japanese joined local companies for work, mainly in the fishing industry.
