Introduction / History

The Tepo Krumen are an indigenous ethnic and linguistic group, part of the broader Kru/Krumen people who live across the border in Liberia. Their language, Tepo Krumen, is spoken as a first language throughout the community. Though not taught in schools, it is actively used in daily life.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The identity of the entire group is known for seafaring, canoe navigation, and labor migration. Their lives are organized around extended family networks with village-based leadership. They are also coastal and forest agriculturalists, cultivating the staple crop cassava, plantains, and palm products, and participating in regional trade networks. Their cultural identity blends oral traditions, proverbs, and storytelling, music and dance in distinctive Kru rhythms. There is a strong emphasis on community cohesion and respect for elders.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Today the majority of Tepo Krumen are Roman Catholic in faith, with the greater influence in larger villages and towns where mission stations were historically established. Some mainline Protestant churches are also present, with a very small but growing minority of evangelical and Pentecostal churches. They use the generic French word for God, Dieu, or an adapted form of it. However, older traditional beliefs emphasizing ancestors and nature spirits continue to shape many aspects of their lives. For example, even committed Christians may interpret misfortune as ancestral displeasure, broken taboos or spiritual imbalance, while still actively participating in church life.

What Are Their Needs?

Communities often face pressure from logging and agricultural expansion and limited access to state services. There is a generational divide over ritual practices and conflicts between church teachings and ancestral customs.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Lord to provide for all their physical and spiritual needs.
Pray that church leaders may understand and teach the gospel clearly and biblically.
Pray for revival in their families and churches, leading to love and good works.
Pray that believers may rightly divide between cultural practices consistent and those inconsistent with Christian faith.
Pray that the church may find its unique place in taking the gospel to unreached and lesser-reach groups.
