The Thimilar are a Tamil-speaking community in Sri Lanka, traditionally known as artisanal fishers along the northern and eastern coasts. The name "Thimilar" comes from the Tamil word thimil (boat) combined with the honorific suffix -ar, meaning "boatmen." Ancient Tamil literature, such as the Akananuru, mentions the Thimilar as seafaring fishermen, and historical texts like the Vaiyapadal describe them as part of the Sindhu Nattar, a group inhabiting the Jaffna Peninsula. Their heritage is deeply tied to the sea, and fishing has shaped their identity, economy, and cultural traditions for centuries.
The Thimilar live primarily in coastal villages where fishing remains the backbone of daily life. Men often go out to sea in small boats, while women and children participate in processing and selling the catch. In some areas, families also engage in cattle cultivation, diversifying their livelihood. Family life is close-knit, with extended households sharing responsibilities and resources.
Celebrations often revolve around Hindu festivals, weddings, and community gatherings, where traditional Tamil music and dance play a role. Food is centered on rice, fish, and curries flavored with coconut and spices, reflecting the broader Tamil culinary heritage. Hospitality is highly valued, and meals are often shared communally.
The majority of Thimilar identify with Hinduism, though there is also a presence of Christianity among them. Hindu practices include devotion to deities, temple worship, and observance of festivals such as Deepavali and Pongal. Christianity, though smaller in influence, has brought some exposure to the gospel, yet the group remains minimally reached. Religious identity is deeply woven into cultural life, and spiritual traditions are passed down through family and community structures.
The Thimilar face both spiritual and physical challenges. Many have not yet heard or embraced the message of Jesus Christ, and there is little history of Christian witness among them. Socially, fishing communities often struggle with economic instability, especially when catches are poor or when environmental changes affect the sea.
Access to education and healthcare can be limited in rural coastal areas, leaving families vulnerable. Spiritually, there is a need for discipleship among those who have encountered the gospel, so that they may grow in faith and become part of the mission force reaching others.
Pray that the Thimilar will encounter the love of Christ in ways that speak to their cultural and spiritual context.
Pray asking God to raise up believers within the community who can share the gospel with their families and neighbors.
Pray for economic stability and sustainable livelihoods, so that families can thrive and children can pursue education.
Pray for those who already know Christ, that they may be strengthened in faith and join in the mission of reaching their own people.
Pray also for openness among Thimilar Hindu families to hear and receive the good news of Jesus.
