Introduction / History

The Vettuvans are a subgroup of the Pulaya peoples. The Pulayas have a tribal background, so they have low status in the Hindu world.

Where Are they Located?

This Hindu people group lives mostly in Kerala, a state in southwestern India. A smaller number live in western Tamil Nadu state.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Along with most other Dalits, the Vettuvan Pulayan are landless. Many are engaged as agricultural laborers, serving landowners without significant pay.

They are known to be talented craftsmen and basket makers. They have a tradition of oral storytelling and folk songs. When they are not working to please their landlords, they enjoy singing and dancing to the music of drums and stringed instruments.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Pulaya Vettuvan people are Hindu. Hinduism is actually a catch-all term for all the indigenous religions of India. Hindu communities are free to worship as many or as few of the millions of gods Hinduism has to offer. As a general rule, they worship gods they believe will offer them protection and favors.

What Are Their Needs?

Like any people group that is despised by others, the Pulaya Vettuvans need to find their sense of worth in Almighty God the Father, who offers everything to His children.
