Introduction / History

The Kare, also known as the Li-Kari-Li, are a Bantu-speaking people living in the north-central region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their communities are found primarily in the vast forested areas of the Congo Basin, where rivers and dense tropical forests have shaped patterns of settlement and daily life for generations. The Kare language belongs to the larger Bantu language family, though many people also use regional trade languages such as Lingala for communication beyond their own communities.

The history of the Kare is closely tied to the forests of central Africa. Like many neighboring peoples, they developed livelihoods adapted to the region's rivers, wildlife, and agricultural opportunities. Colonial rule, missionary activity, and the growth of modern transportation and trade gradually connected Kare communities more closely with the wider nation. Despite these changes, many Kare continue to maintain a distinct ethnic identity rooted in their language, family networks, and local traditions.

Today, the Kare remain one of the many ethnic groups that contribute to the cultural diversity of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Kare people live in rural villages surrounded by forest and farmland. Agriculture provides the foundation of daily life, with families cultivating crops such as cassava, maize, bananas, plantains, and vegetables. Farming is often carried out by household members working together, and harvests are used both for family consumption and for sale in local markets.

Fishing, hunting, and gathering forest products also contribute to livelihoods in some areas. Rivers serve as important routes for transportation, trade, and access to neighboring communities. Small-scale commerce allows families to obtain goods that are not produced locally.

Family relationships are central to Kare society. Extended families commonly maintain close ties, and community life often revolves around cooperation among relatives and neighbors. Elders are respected for their experience and guidance, while children are gradually introduced to the responsibilities of adult life through participation in family and community activities.

Although many villages retain strong traditional patterns of life, modern influences such as mobile phones, education, and increased contact with urban centers continue to shape the aspirations of younger generations. Access to services such as healthcare, transportation, and quality education remains uneven in many areas.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Kare identify with Christianity, and churches are present in a number of communities. Christian teaching, worship services, and church activities have introduced many people to the message of Jesus Christ and continue to influence community life.

Alongside Christianity, traditional religious beliefs remain significant for some individuals and families. Many people believe that spiritual forces affect daily events and may seek protection, healing, or guidance through rituals, ancestral spirits, or religious specialists. These practices are often viewed as practical responses to life's uncertainties and reflect genuine trust in spiritual powers beyond the physical world.

As a result, some people blend Christian beliefs with traditional spiritual practices. While many have heard the gospel, a clear understanding of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone is not always present. Biblical discipleship and spiritual growth remain important needs so that believers can build their lives upon the truth of God's word.

The good news of Christ offers freedom from fear of spiritual powers and invites people into a restored relationship with God through His grace.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Kare communities would benefit from improved access to healthcare, education, transportation, and economic opportunities. Geographic isolation and limited infrastructure can make it difficult for families to obtain essential services.

Agricultural development and sustainable income opportunities could help strengthen household stability and improve living conditions. Support for schools and literacy programs would also equip future generations with valuable skills.

The church requires ongoing encouragement, leadership development, and access to biblical resources that can help believers mature in their faith. Strong discipleship is especially important where traditional spiritual beliefs continue to influence decision-making and religious practice.

Faithful Christian workers can play an important role in helping local congregations grow in biblical understanding and participate more fully in God's mission. As believers mature, they can become witnesses of Christ both within their own communities and among neighboring peoples.

Prayer Items

Pray for a powerful revival in the Church in the DRC that will bless all of Africa.
Pray for better access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities in Kare communities.
Pray that families will experience stability, hope, and strong relationships rooted in godly values.
Pray that those who trust in spiritual powers apart from Christ will come to know the salvation and freedom found in Jesus.
Pray for churches and Christian leaders to be strengthened as they disciple believers and share the gospel with surrounding peoples.
