At one time the Midgan people were hunters and gatherers. Some performed circumcisions for other Somali people, which was considered an unclean profession. Though the Somalis are an ethnically cohesive group, they have castes which divide them. The Midgans are among the least prestigious castes among Somali people, both in Somalia and Kenya.
There are only a couple thousand Midgan people, but they live either in Somalia or Kenya. There might be some in Ethiopia as well.
Today the Midgan people are artisans who perform the lowliest of jobs—smiths, barbers, leather-workers, street-sweepers, and janitors. Traditionally, they have been forbidden from owning land and livestock, and even today they cannot participate in local business or politics. Their lines of work are considered very dirty, so they are also considered a unclean people. Rape by other Somali clans is a common occurrence, and it usually goes unpunished. In addition, Midgan children do not go to school because they cannot afford fees and are at risk of mistreatment by other children. They have been given the pejorative name of Madhiban.
Surprisingly, the Midgan people in Somalia adhere to their tribal religion, while those in Kenya have converted to Islam.
The Midgan people in Kenya need the opportunity to learn new trades and skills so they can get out of their low position.
Pray for the Midgan people to be given the chance to encounter the Savior who loves and accepts all who come to Him.
Pray for spiritual discernment and the ability to understand that Jesus Christ offers them the chance to become part of His high kingdom.
Pray for a Disciple-Making movement to emerge among the Midgan people both in Kenya and in Somalia.
Scripture Prayers for the Madhiban in Kenya.
