Introduction / History

If you lived in British controlled Kenya in the earlier half of the 20th century, you might think that all Sikhs were moving to Africa! That is because untold numbers of Ramgarhia Sikhs were sent from the Punjab to Africa in the late 1800s to help the British construct railroads. After the completion of the projects, most made their way to England and North America. Why were the Ramgarhia recruited to build railroads? It was probably because they are builders by caste. In the Punjabi language, "garh" means "stronghold" or "fort." Ramgarhia means "those who construct forts." Only a small number remain in India.

What Are Their Lives Like?

We know little about their lifestyle today. Some probably still work in construction.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Sikhs like the Ramgarhias know God as creator, but they do not understand that man is in dire need of a sin-free savior. Where are the people who will tell them about the one who is the truth?

What Are Their Needs?

There probably are no Christ followers among the Sikh Ramgarhia people. Someone needs to make the effort to win them to the only savior or mankind.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to make agencies aware of the Ramgarhias.
Ask Him to raise up workers who will tell them about Christ.
Pray for the hearts of these people to be fertile ground, ready to receive and respond to the free gift of salvation.
