Introduction / History

The Lavana in Rajasthan speak Begri and read and write in Devanagari. They are not vegetarians and eat wheat and other cereals. They do not allow the divorced and widows to marry again. The dead are cremated. On the death of the father, sons inherit the property with the youngest son getting more. They work in cattle trading and agriculture. A caste council looks after them. Hinduism is their religion. They believe in education and use modern and traditional medicines as well as using family planning.

The Lavana in Gujarat speak in Banjari and read and write in Gujarati. In Himachal Pradesh they speak Banjari and read and write in Devanagari. In Chandigarh, Punjab and Goa they speak Banjari too. In Tamil Nadu they speak Lambadi.

In Andhra Pradesh they are a Scheduled Tribe and speak Lambani or Lamani and have a low literacy level, so the gospel will need to be given in oral form too.

The Labana also live in Haryana.
