Introduction / History

The Bakati people have a deep-rooted history in India, traditionally residing in the rural and hilly regions of Odisha. They speak Odia, the language of that eastern state. They have a long-standing tradition of agriculture and animal husbandry. The Bakati speak their own dialect, enriched with elements from the local languages, which reflects their culture and history.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today, the Bakati people live in small villages and rural areas. They primarily engage in farming, cultivating crops such as rice, wheat and maize and raising livestock. Their communities are close-knit, emphasizing family bonds and mutual assistance. The Bakati sustain a vibrant cultural life, enjoying local festivals, music and traditional crafts.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bakati people practice Hinduism, worshiping a range of deities and observing various religious rituals and festivals such as Diwali, Holi, and Makar Sankranti. Their belief system values dharma (duty), karma (actions and their consequences), and ahimsa (non-violence). They also perform rituals to honor their ancestors, ensuring that their religious practices and cultural traditions are preserved and passed down through generations.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bakati people need better access to quality education to provide more opportunities for their children. Improved healthcare services are essential, as many communities lack adequate medical facilities and face high rates of preventable diseases. Economic support through modern agricultural techniques, market access, and vocational training can enhance their livelihoods. Infrastructure development, including better roads, clean water supplies, and reliable electricity, will significantly benefit the Bakati community. Addressing these needs will help the Bakati people achieve greater socio-economic stability.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to provide a record harvest for the Bakati people as a testimony of his power and goodness.
Pray for the Lord to thrust out the right workers for the Bakati people.
Pray for Bakati elders and leaders to find their way to the cross and share Christ’s glory with others.
