Tumie speakers occupy an inland swathe of land from Wide Bay to Waterfall Bay in the Pomio District of East New Britain Province, and a small border area inland from Open Bay in the Talasea District of West New Britain Province. Tumie is the primary language of all generations.
Cocoa is their main cash crop. However, some earn income by selling food crops, coconut, betelnut, and poultry. Others might earn income from forestry royalties or employment in larger towns.
About 90 per cent of Tumie speakers identify with Christianity, but they don't have any scriptures in their language.
Self-reported literacy rates are between 50 per cent and 77 per cent. However, there is evidence that the actual capacity to read is closer to 15 to 25 per cent.
Pray for better education standards and that the people will have access to audio scriptures in a language that they understand.
Pray that they will desire to know God's word and will advocate for Bible translation.
Ask the Lord of the harvest for workers to bring his word and more of his love to the Tumie speakers!
Pray that the Tumie-speaking people will flourish economically where God has placed them.
