Introduction / History

The Tikar live in the Bamenda Grassfields in Cameroon. Before the 1800s this region was too mountainous and remote for people to come and go except by foot. They once lived further north until Fulani herdsmen drove them south. They fled partly to avoid being forced to become Muslim. There are Tikar subgroups, one of which is the Twumwu.

For many years the Tikar were the only group in their region who practiced iron work. Fathers were careful to teach their sons the family craft.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Twumwu Tikar are farmers who grow sugar cane, cassava, cocoa, coffee, bananas and plantains.

They are known to be great artists and their masks are an important part of their culture.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though they are largely Christian, the Twumwu Tikar have traditional religious practices.

What Are Their Needs?

The Twumwu Tikar need to put all their faith in Christ. He alone can provide them with an abundant life.
