Introduction / History

The Tepeth people live in the mountainous region of northeastern Uganda, primarily on Mount Moroto and surrounding areas. They are considered one of the smaller ethnic groups in the Karamoja cluster and speak a language related to the Nilo-Saharan family. Historically, the Tepeth were pastoralists who migrated to the mountains for protection during times of conflict and cattle raids. Their isolation has preserved many traditional customs, though modern influences are slowly reaching their communities.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Tepeth people rely on livestock herding as their main source of livelihood, raising cattle, goats, and sheep. They also practice small-scale farming, growing crops such as sorghum and millet when conditions allow. Water scarcity and unpredictable weather make life challenging, and families often move in search of pasture and water. Homes are simple structures made from local materials, and family life is communal, with extended kinship ties playing a central role. Celebrations often include traditional songs, dances, and feasts during weddings or seasonal events. Meat and milk are staples in their diet, supplemented by grains when available.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Tepeth people are primarily Christian, though their faith is usually blended with traditional religion.

Most hold beliefs centered on spirits associated with nature and ancestors. Rituals to appease these spirits are common, especially during times of drought or illness.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to clean water and healthcare is extremely limited, leaving many vulnerable to disease and malnutrition. Education opportunities are scarce, and most children do not attend school regularly. Economic challenges persist due to reliance on livestock and the impact of environmental stress.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Tepeth people to have opportunities to hear and respond to the message of Jesus Christ.
Ask God to send workers who will live among them and demonstrate his love through both word and deed.
Pray for improved access to clean water, healthcare, and education so families can thrive physically and socially.
Intercede for peace and stability in their region, and for sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
