The Tagalog are the largest ethnic groups residing in the Philippines, especially in Luzon. They are one of the ancient dwellers of the Philippines. The Tagalog culture developed in Taal, Batangas (the heartland of the Tagalog culture). The traditions of this people where passed orally. They developed a trading link with the neighboring countries such as China, Japan, etc. They do not form a country but rather a community comprised of 100 families called "barangays". They have a writing system called "baybayin" which is a type of Abugida writing system. It uses diacritics to determine its pronunciation (similar to the dhevanagari script of India). During the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, the Tagalog homeland (especially Manila) became the center of colonial activity. The culture of this people dramatically changed from Asian to Hispanic culture (a combination of the two) during their rapid Christianization. They are the ones who revolted against the Spanish regime. They conquer the southern provinces. They fought (together with other ethnic groups) against the invading Americans and later, the Japanese. During independence, the population of this people grew rapidly; a poor economy and resulting poverty caused them to move abroad to work.
They are located at the southern part of the island of Luzon and nearby islands. The regions of Calabarzon and Mimaropa have the greatest concentrations of this people and because of their large geographic distribution this caused the region to be divided into two (the said regions at the top).
Their religion is Christianity but some follow Islam. Some Tagalogs believe in traditional healers/herbmen called "Albularyo" who heal them from their illnesses. Many also believe in mythical creatures like aswang, multo and maligno.
