The Sechelt people, also known as the shíshálh Nation, are a Coast Salish community whose ancestral territory extends along the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. The name Sechelt is widely used in English, while shíshálh is the traditional name used within the Nation itself. They speak English rather than their own language. Their homeland includes sheltered inlets, islands, rivers, and forested mountains that have shaped their history and way of life for generations.
Oral tradition preserves knowledge of early settlements, family lineages, travel routes, and the deep relationship between the people and the land. Over time, the Sechelt experienced shifts brought by outside contact, schooling, and regional development. Even so, community efforts continue to strengthen language, cultural teachings, and shared identity rooted in their historic lands.
Life among the Sechelt reflects both a rich coastal environment and the realities of contemporary Canada. Families engage in fishing, harvesting, and cultural activities connected to the land and sea. Knowledge of marine resources, cedar, and seasonal cycles remains important for many, and traditional crafts, stories, and ceremonies help pass wisdom from one generation to another.
Modern livelihoods may include work in education, administration, construction, tourism, and community services. Homes, schools, cultural centers, and local governance structures provide places where the community gathers, plans, and teaches. Efforts to revitalize the Sechelt language, she sháshíshálhem, form an important part of cultural renewal, helping younger generations connect more deeply with their heritage.
Most Sechelt people identify in some way with Christianity. The degree of practice varies, and individuals draw upon different influences shaped by family, community, and local church traditions. Some older cultural understandings connected to community life and the natural world continue to be valued, though these should not be overstated or assumed to be followed uniformly.
Where Christian teaching is present, believers may gather for worship, prayer, and the study of Scripture when available. Faith grows best through patient discipleship, clear teaching, and relationships built on trust and respect.
Healthy ministry among the Sechelt benefits from humility, long-term presence, and a willingness to honor local culture while pointing clearly to Christ. Community members appreciate relationships that strengthen families, encourage young people, and support those seeking to follow Jesus with greater depth.
Scripture engagement—whether through reading, listening, or discussion—can foster spiritual growth. Training for local leaders and resources suited to oral learning and community-based teaching can help build a strong foundation for future generations of believers.
Pray for Sechelt believers to grow deeply in their walk with Christ and in their understanding of Scripture.
Pray for wise and humble local leaders who can teach faithfully and serve their communities with integrity.
Pray for families to experience healing, unity, and renewed hope through the gospel.
Pray for increased use of Scripture in forms that are meaningful within the community.
Pray that Sechelt believers will share the hope of Christ with neighboring peoples in ways that show love and respect.
