Introduction / History

The Sakau people of Vanuatu are an indigenous Oceanic people primarily living in the northeast of Espiritu Santo Island in Sanma Province (their language is N'kep). They are part of the broader cultural mosaic of Vanuatu's rural communities, shaped by centuries of village life, oral tradition, and island social systems. Christianity, introduced by missionaries over the last 200+ years, is now part of community identity alongside older social customs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Sakau families focus on subsistence gardening and local work rooted in land and sea, with food from gardens (root vegetables, fruits, fish) central to daily life and celebration. Family bonds are strong, with extended kin networks shaping social life and mutual aid. Celebrations often center on church events and village gatherings, and shared meals are common. Community time in the nakamal—a traditional meeting place—often includes conversation and fellowship.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Sakau identify as Christian, with Roman Catholic and other church influences present. Many retain elements of ancestral worldview and respect for kastom (traditional ways) alongside church life. Under Christian teaching, Jesus Christ is seen as Savior and Lord, yet some traditional spiritual ideas persist informally in stories and community memory.

What Are Their Needs?

The Sakau people long for disciples who will deepen their walk with Christ and see local believers equipped for leadership and teaching rooted in Scripture. They desire sustained access to discipleship resources in their heart language and support for community development that aligns with gospel values. Strengthening families, mentoring youth, and supporting church growth with culturally fitting ministry are important. Continued engagement that honors their dignity and invites Christ into every aspect of life will bear fruit.

Prayer Items

Pray that Sakau believers will be bold and wise witnesses for Christ in homes and villages.
Pray for deeper understanding of God's Word in N'kep and that churches will flourish in unity and holiness.
Pray for physical needs—healthy livelihoods, strong schools, and resilient families.
Pray that Jesus' love will break through every barrier of fear or tradition, bringing hope and transformation to every Sakau heart.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the N'kep language.
