Introduction / History

The Rengao are a subgroup of the Bahnar ethnic group in Vietnam, also known as Ro Ngao or Western Rengao, belonging to the Mon-Khmer linguistic family. They reside primarily in Kon Tum Province in the central highlands, between areas inhabited by the Sedang and Bahnar peoples. Their history traces back to ancient inhabitants of the Truong Son-Tay Nguyen region, where they have developed a distinct cultural identity amid interactions with neighboring groups, colonial influences, and integration into modern Vietnamese society.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Rengao rely on slash-and-burn agriculture, cultivating crops like rice, cassava, sugar cane, bananas, tobacco, and vegetables in swidden fields, while also engaging in animal husbandry, fishing, hunting, gathering forest products, basketry, weaving, pottery, and blacksmithing. Family dynamics follow matrilineal traditions in some communities, with extended families where the husband may live with the wife's family after marriage, and children often taking the mother's family name, emphasizing inheritance through daughters and respect for elders. Celebrations include festivals with gong music, dancing, and communal rituals tied to agricultural cycles, such as harvest times or village ceremonies held in the communal house. Food consists of daily plain rice meals, supplemented by cassava, vegetables, and meats from hunting or livestock, with special occasions featuring ruou can, a fermented wine made from rice, corn, or millet, drunk through pipes from jars.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Rengao primarily follow ethnic religions, incorporating animistic beliefs in spirits and polytheism. There are a small number who have put their faith in the blood of Christ, and they need to take this abundant hope to others.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to quality education and healthcare is restricted in their remote highland villages, affecting community development and health outcomes. Improved infrastructure, such as roads and water supply systems, would facilitate better economic activities and daily living. Opportunities for engaging with the gospel are limited, hindering spiritual growth and exploration of Christian faith.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Rengao will hear and respond to the message of Jesus Christ, finding solutions to life's challenges through faith in the only Savior.
Pray for enhanced educational and medical resources to improve well-being in isolated areas.
Pray that believers among the Rengao will be empowered to witness effectively within their communities.
Pray for sustainable farming practices and alleviation of economic hardships.
Pray that Christ's blessings will unite the Rengao and motivate them to contribute to the global mission force.
