Also referred to as the Otoe-Missouria tribe, the Otoe tribe now lives primarily in Oklahoma. The Otoe Tribe also developed in the neighboring present-day states of Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska. The Otoe remains the first tribe historically to interact with the Lewis and Clark Expedition at the historic site of Council Bluff. The Otoe tribe communicated amicably with the Expedition, providing protection as they ventured West. Historically though, the Otoe suffered from the loss of lands and suffered through diseases spread with their contact with outsiders. The federal government stepped in to provide land at Red Rock, Oklahoma, where the now-recognized Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Indians exists and continues to grow.
The Otoe Tribe speak Jiwére ich'é, translated as Hand Talk, before switching to speak in English as their main form of linguistic communication. As their ancestors hunted bison, the men frequently left their homes for periods of time to secure both food and clothing from their caught game.
From the 1800s to the 1900s, the Otoe Tribe struggled to adapt to reservation life, so their severing split from the current Sac and Fox Nation provided preservation Otoe Tribe to keep growing, albeit with the loss of tribal numbers. Today, many still struggle.
The Otoe tribe traditionally followed traditions found in the Drum Society. This tribe also adopted and developed a syncretic expression of Christianity through the Native American Church, which blended the Otoe Tribe's heritage with modern-day Christianity.
After historically agreeing to follow a significant number of treaties with the United States, the Otoe Tribe learned that compromise and forced injustice became necessary for their survival. While an excellent sign of adaptability, the fact that the Otoe Tribe suffered so many losses naturally severs communication with outsiders, as the group would naturally rather work with their own than get help from others. Trust has long since been broken.
Pray for our Heavenly Father to provide healing from the historical damage that plagues them today.
Pray for our Father to reveal himself with care and providing the solution of Jesus Christ, so they embrace the dignity God gave them, and share it with others.
May our God win, equip, and send Otoe Christian believers to those without hope.
