Ngungwel translators have completed some New Testament portion drafts and published two parables. The people live off what they grow in gardens and cultivate from the land. The Ngungwel language is part of the Teke family of languages.
Traditional religion had a firm grip on the Ngungwel people. Then someone got a glimpse of the Gospel. Just a small light of truth burst on the scene, prompting more questions and igniting a quest for God.
There was no outside support or encouragement, just an internal motivation to find out more about Jesus. Without training, a group of Ngungwel men started to translate God's Word into their heart language. Realizing they needed help, this band of believers approached SIL-Congo. SIL has given some of them training, as well as adding some better qualified translators to the team to help them achieve their strong desire to have the Bible in Ngungwel.
Even with the advancements in heart language Scripture, believers still battle the influence of the traditional belief system on their daily lives. Many believers juggle a confusing mixture of culture and Christianity, robbing them of true freedom.
