Introduction / History

The Makhuwa-Marrevone are one of the many Makhuwa-speaking peoples of northern Mozambique. They belong to the larger Makhuwa ethnic family, whose language varieties form part of the Niger-Congo language family. Although each Makhuwa community has its own local identity, they share many historical and cultural ties that have developed over centuries.

For generations the Makhuwa-Marrevone have lived in northern Mozambique, where agriculture, trade, and strong family networks have shaped community life. Their language and oral traditions continue to connect them with their history while they adapt to the social and economic changes taking place across the country.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Makhuwa-Marrevone live in rural communities where farming provides the foundation of daily life. Families commonly cultivate cassava, maize, beans, and other staple crops, while some also participate in local trade, fishing, or seasonal employment.

Extended family relationships are central to the community. Elders are respected for their wisdom, and oral traditions, music, dance, and storytelling continue to preserve cultural values.
