Introduction / History

There is confusion between the Nepalese and the Bhutanese people in Australia. The Nepalese are usually Hindu, whereas the Bhutanese are Tibetan Buddhists. The latter had the misfortune of being driven out of Bhutan into Nepal, then becoming refugees in other nations like Australia. Most arrived in Australia since 1990. The Hindus, most of whom are ethnic Nepalis, were often driven out by a Maoist insurgency that caused death and destruction in their mountain homeland. They live mainly in Sydney and Melbourne.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Nepalis in Australia hold various jobs. They might hold humble jobs, or they might be medical doctors or businessmen. Others are students who will probably return home in a couple of years.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though most Nepalis in Australia are Hindu, there is a sizable Buddhist, Muslim and Christian minorities among them. Audio, visual and a complete Bible are available in the Nepali language.

What Are Their Needs?

Vocational Christians may have opportunities to live among the Nepali people in Australia, creating opportunities to be in daily contact to earn respect and confidence, and hopefully the privilege to speak God's truth into their lives. Though Nepalis have a high standing within Australia, they are poor, needy, and without hope since they don't have the sin-bearing savior.

Prayer Points

* Scripture Prayers for the Nepali, general in Australia.

Nepali people in Australia need to see their critical need for their savior, who loves them and desires a personal relationship with them. They need to see that they cannot be accepted by the creator of the universe except through his son. Pray for believers in Australia to make a concerted effort to reach Nepalis for Christ. Pray for a disciple making movement among Nepalis in Australia.
