The Nathembo people of Mozambique have lived in the southeastern coastal regions for generations. Historically, they sustained themselves through fishing and trade, making use of their proximity to the Indian Ocean. Despite interactions with other ethnic groups and Portuguese colonizers, the Nathembo have maintained their distinct language and traditions.

Social events like weddings and harvest celebrations are key in maintaining community bonds.

The Nathembo follow a blend of indigenous spirituality and Islam, influenced by historical trade with Arab merchants. Ancestor veneration remains central, with ceremonies that honor and seek guidance from the spirits. Islamic practices, including daily prayers and festivals, are also integrated into their lives.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nathembo face challenges such as limited access to education and healthcare. As a coastal community, they are particularly vulnerable to climate change, including rising sea levels and severe storms. Additionally, preserving their language and cultural practices requires support, as external influences pose a threat to their continuity.
