Introduction / History

The Kwinti are descendants of former African slaves living in the forest region of Suriname. They are classified as Maroon people: escaped slaves who formed their own settlements, mingling with local indigenous groups. They speak an English-based creole with influences from Dutch, Portuguese and other languages.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kwinti can be found in the Bitagron, Heidoti, and Kaaminanston villages of Suriname. They are the minority in the Pakka-Pakka and Makajapingo villages. Kwinti groups are ruled by a “granman,” or head chief.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditionally, the Kwinti followed the Winti religion of the Maroons. This religion is founded on belief in a creator, a spirit world and veneration of ancestors. In recent times, most Kwinti follow the beliefs of the Moravian church.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kwinti need to put Christ first in their lives.

Prayer Points

Ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into His field. Pray for their fellowships to be Christ centered, rather than focused on tradition, cultural religions, or any other distractions.
Pray that Kwinti believers would both reach their own people and send loving missionaries to other people groups in their area.
