The Kariya people of Nigeria’s Bauchi state have their own language by the same name. They have six prominent clans.
Most are farmers who grow cassava, millet, corn, beans and yams. In recent years more are going into professions such as medicine and journalism.
The Kariyas are fortunate and wise enough to avoid destructive squabbles with neighboring tribes. They have festivals which include the use of masks and dances.
Though most Kariya people are Muslim, there is a small Christian minority among them. All Kariya people struggle with falling back into their traditional Animistic religion.
The Kariya people struggle to have enough clean water for their crops and livestock.
