Introduction / History

The Kais Aiso are a small ethnolinguistic group living in Papua, Indonesia. They belong to the New Guinea people cluster within the Pacific Islanders affinity bloc. Their language, Kais (also called Aiso), is distinct and ties them closely to their ancestral heritage. Historically, the Kais Aiso have lived in remote villages, maintaining traditional ways of life while gradually encountering outside influences through limited contact with traders and missionaries. Their isolation has preserved much of their cultural identity, but it has also slowed the spread of education, healthcare, and the gospel.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kais Aiso live primarily through subsistence farming, fishing, and hunting. Families cultivate crops such as sweet potatoes, taro, bananas, and sago, which form the staple diet. Men often hunt wild game or fish in rivers, while women tend gardens and care for children. Extended family ties are strong, with clans forming the backbone of social organization.

Celebrations include weddings, harvest festivals, and Christian holidays, often marked by communal meals, music, and dance. Food is shared generously, reflecting the communal spirit of the people. Despite their remoteness, the Kais Aiso are resilient and resourceful, drawing strength from their land and traditions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kais Aiso identify primarily with Christianity, with Roman Catholicism being the dominant tradition. Evangelical presence exists but remains limited. Many Kais Aiso blend Christian teaching with ancestral beliefs, relying on spirits for protection and guidance. While the gospel has made inroads, discipleship and biblical teaching remain shallow, and strong indigenous leadership is still developing.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kais Aiso face both spiritual and physical challenges. Spiritually, they require deeper engagement with Scripture in their own language, as translation work is incomplete and resources such as the JESUS Film are not yet available. All they have are audio recordings from GRN. Without tools, understanding of the gospel remains limited to what they can understand in a different language.

Physically, their remote location makes access to healthcare and education difficult, leaving many vulnerable to preventable diseases and lacking opportunities for literacy. Infrastructure development, such as clean water and transportation, would greatly improve their quality of life. Holistic mission efforts that combine gospel proclamation with practical support are essential for their flourishing.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Kais Aiso will encounter Jesus Christ in a personal and transformative way, moving beyond nominal identification with Christianity to vibrant discipleship.
Pray asking the Lord to raise up local believers who can lead their communities with wisdom and courage.
Pray for their physical needs, including access to healthcare, education, and clean water, that their communities may thrive.
Pray for mission workers to be sent, and for Kais Aiso believers themselves to become part of the mission force, carrying the gospel to neighboring groups.
