Introduction / History

The Haya people (also called Ziba or Bumbira) live in the Kagera Region of northwestern Tanzania, largely in the Bukoba urban and rural districts near Lake Victoria. They are among Tanzania's larger ethnic groups and speak the Haya language, a Bantu language with deep roots in the region. Historically, the Haya had complex social structures and a cultural identity tied to agriculture, crafts, and local governance long before modern national borders were drawn.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Haya society remains strongly family-centered with extended families and clan relationships shaping daily life, decisions, and social support. Agriculture is central; mixed farming of bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes, and other staples is common, and household gardens provide much of their food supply. Market trading, fishing on Lake Victoria, and small business enterprises supplement farm income. Community life features music, dance, and shared celebrations for weddings, harvests, and church festivals, reflecting both cultural heritage and Christian influence.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Over three-fourths identify as Christian, with most affiliated with historic churches such as Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant bodies. There is a complete Bible in the Haya language, and the JESUS Film and other Scripture-based resources are available in Haya. While Christianity is widespread, traditional cultural beliefs and practices may still influence worldview for some, especially in rural areas where ancestral customs and local ceremonies continue to have social significance.

What Are Their Needs?

The Haya have significant church presence, but many communities need deeper biblical discipleship that moves beyond cultural Christianity to robust gospel obedience and spiritual maturity. Growth in locally led, Scripture-centered ministries is needed to equip believers for faithful witness within families and villages. Continued access to Christian education, leadership training, and community development will strengthen church health and societal impact.

Prayer Items

Pray for Haya believers to deepen their understanding of Scripture and apply it faithfully in daily life.
Pray for strong, godly leaders and pastors to rise from among the Haya and guide the church with biblical wisdom.
Pray that traditional beliefs that compete with gospel truth would be replaced by full trust in Christ.
Pray for the next generation to be raised in homes that reflect Christ's love and truth.
Pray for Haya Christian believers to become Christ's ambassadors to ethnic groups that lack hope.
