The Beketan people, also known as Bakatan or Bukitan, are a small ethnic group living in northern Kalimantan near the Sarawak border. Thus, they live in both Indonesia and Malaysia. Their language, Bukitan, belongs to the Austronesian family and is part of the Borneo linguistic cluster. Historically, the Beketan were forest dwellers who practiced shifting cultivation and hunting. They migrated from interior regions of Borneo due to tribal conflicts and gradually settled along rivers in Kalimantan and Sarawak.
Today, they maintain aspects of their traditional identity while adapting to modern influences. The Beketan live in small rural villages surrounded by forests and rivers. Farming is their main occupation, with rice and vegetables grown for family use. Some families raise chickens and pigs or gather forest products to supplement their diet. Houses are typically wooden and built on stilts. Families are close-knit, and community cooperation is common during planting, harvesting, weddings, and funerals. Celebrations often include traditional music and dance, and meals feature rice as the staple food, accompanied by vegetables, fish, and occasionally meat for special occasions.
The Beketan identify primarily as Christians, with Protestant and Catholic traditions present among them. While the gospel has reached their communities, spiritual understanding is often shallow, and some traditional customs remain part of social life. There is a need for deeper discipleship and biblical teaching so that faith in Christ becomes central and not mixed with older practices.
Access to education and healthcare is limited because of their remote location. Economic opportunities are few, and families depend on subsistence farming. Roads and infrastructure are poor, making travel and trade difficult. Spiritually, the Beketan need strong local leaders and teaching that will help churches grow in biblical faith. Scripture translation and discipleship resources are necessary for spiritual maturity, but they have little or no gospel materials in their language. They must hear the gospel in other languages.
Pray for committed local leaders who will teach God's word faithfully and lead churches toward spiritual maturity.
Ask God to provide better education and healthcare for Beketan families living in remote areas.
Pray for freedom from lingering traditional practices and for hearts fully devoted to Christ.
Intercede for the Beketan to become a vibrant part of the global discipleship force, sharing the gospel beyond their communities.
