Introduction / History

In the 18th and 19th century the Bare had close association with the Werekena. Together they were put in a state of virtual slavery by Spanish and Portuguese authorities and merchants. They moved to river headwaters to escape the Europeans.

Today they live mainly in Brazil and Venezuela though some also live in Colombia.


What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bare people are farmers, hunters and fishermen. They extract piassava fiber which is coveted by local traders. This provides them with a source of cash.


What Are Their Beliefs?

Though there is some Roman Catholic influence among the Bare, they also preserve their ancient animistic religion.


What Are Their Needs?

The Bare people need to learn 21st century work skills so they can excel in a modern economy.
