Introduction / History

The Ndasa—also known as Andasa or Bandasa—are a Bantu people living in the Lékoumou department, west of Zanaga in the Republic of Congo. Their language, Ndasa, is a Bantu tongue spoken in both Congo and Gabon. They belong to the broader Northwest Bantu cluster and share cultural and historical connections with other Bantu peoples in the region. Their long presence in the forested zones of southern Congo has shaped their identity, livelihoods, and patterns of community life.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Ndasa communities live in rural forest environments where farming, gathering, and small-scale hunting shape daily work. Family fields are cultivated with staple crops suited to the tropical climate, and households rely on cooperative labor for planting and harvesting. Meals typically consist of locally grown produce, forest vegetables, and cassava-based dishes.

Family life centers on extended kinship networks. Children grow up contributing to household work, and elders play a respected role in maintaining community cohesion. Celebrations often occur around agricultural seasons, family milestones, and church gatherings, offering opportunities for singing, shared meals, and storytelling.

Their villages may have limited educational and medical access; schooling often requires travel to other settlements, and clinics inside the forested region may be sparse. These difficulties contribute to ongoing challenges in literacy and health.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the main faith among the Ndasa, and the community identifies strongly with Christian teaching. Churches are present, and many families participate in worship and Christian holidays. Some individuals maintain elements of older ethnic religious practices, including respect for ancestral influence or use of customary objects, but these are not the primary religious identity today. Such practices should be spoken of respectfully, while recognizing that only Jesus Christ offers true spiritual life and freedom.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to Scripture is limited, as the Ndasa language still lacks a full Bible translation. Strengthening literacy would help families engage more deeply with God's Word. Reliable healthcare remains difficult to obtain, especially for maternal care and preventable diseases. Such challenges affect daily wellbeing and long-term stability within the community.

Spiritually, there is a need for continued discipleship and deeper grounding in God's Word to strengthen churches and help believers mature. Communities benefit from leadership development, biblical teaching, and clarity regarding the gospel's call to follow Christ wholeheartedly rather than mixing faith with earlier practices.

Prayer Items

Pray for improved access to healthcare and for protection from preventable illnesses.
Pray that scripture translation efforts in the Ndasa language will flourish, allowing families to hear and study God's word in their mother tongue.
Pray that believers will grow strong in Christ, resisting fear-based practices from older traditions.
Pray that Ndasa churches will send workers to nearby groups who lack a clear gospel witness.
