Introduction / History

The Nafana Banda people live primarily in the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana, including the districts of Jaman North, Jaman South, Tain, and the Banda area. They speak Nafaanra, a Senufo language, and share historical ties with related communities in Côte d'Ivoire. Oral traditions describe their migration from a village called Kakala, with several accounts tracing their deeper roots to earlier movements connected to the broader Senufo world. Their arrival in the Banda region followed earlier settlements by the Ligbi people, and over time they established towns such as Sampa, Kokoa, Jamera, Duadaso, Debibi, and Kabile.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Nafana Banda communities are primarily farming societies. Households cultivate crops such as corn, rice, yams, peanuts, sesame, and sweet potatoes, often working together in extended family groups. Daily life blends agricultural rhythms with communal activities, shared meals, and strong kinship ties.

Festivals provide important social cohesion. Their major cultural celebration is the Songhei Festival, also called Sugweh, traditionally centered in Jamera. This annual event brings together chiefs, families, and visitors for drumming, dancing, and storytelling that honor their heritage. In many towns, community life is marked by cooperative labor, seasonal rituals, and intergenerational teaching of customs that strengthen their cultural identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The primary religious identity of the Nafana Banda people is tied to ethnic traditional religions. Their worldview includes longstanding customs, ancestral reverence, and rituals rooted in local tradition. Some communities also reflect influences from neighboring regions, but their core beliefs remain tied to their heritage.

Scripture is available in languages they understand, including national languages and regional trade languages familiar to Nafana Banda speakers.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nafana Banda people benefit from opportunities for growing spiritual understanding and access to Christian teaching expressed in culturally meaningful ways. Their rural communities face ongoing needs in education, healthcare, and sustainable agriculture. Stronger local fellowship and emerging Christian leaders can help support families spiritually and socially.
