Introduction / History

The Acatepec are a subgroup of the greater Tlapaneco peoples. Most live in the Mexican state of Guerrero, but a small number have settled in the United States after coming as migrant workers.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Acatepec Tlapaneco is a farming community. For cash crops they grow bananas, sugar cane and coffee. For their daily meals they grow corn, beans, squash and chili peppers. The poorer ones must sell the beans they grow rather than eat them. Those who are day laborers are known for their hard work.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Acatepec Tlapaneco worship both a male and a female god. They also have “impersonal gods” which are being replaced by their Roman Catholic beliefs. Almost all identify as Roman Catholic, but they still practice their traditional religion.

What Are Their Needs?

The Acatepec Tlapaneco need better farming equipment so they can have a better yield.
