Introduction / History

The Beginci are an indigenous ethnic group living in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, primarily in the Ketapang Regency. They speak the Beginci language, which belongs to the Austronesian family and is part of the Land Dayak cluster. Historically, the Beginci have lived in rural areas along rivers and forested regions, practicing traditional farming and maintaining close ties to their land. Their culture reflects the heritage of Borneo's Dayak peoples, with customs rooted in animistic traditions and community-based living. Over time, outside influences such as trade and limited government interaction have introduced modern elements, but the Beginci still preserve much of their traditional identity.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Beginci live in small villages where farming is the main occupation. They grow rice, vegetables, and sometimes cash crops, using traditional methods. Hunting and fishing supplement their diet. Families are close-knit, and extended relatives often live nearby. Community cooperation is important, especially during planting and harvest seasons. Houses are typically made of wood and raised on stilts to protect from flooding.

Celebrations often include traditional music, dance, and communal meals. Food staples include rice, sago, and locally grown vegetables, often accompanied by fish or meat from hunting. Festivals and rituals mark life events such as births, marriages, and harvests, reinforcing social bonds and cultural identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Beginci traditionally follow ethnic religions that center on nature and ancestral spirits. Rituals often involve offerings and ceremonies to maintain harmony with the spiritual world. Today, some Beginci identify as Christians, but many still mix traditional practices with newer beliefs. There is little exposure to biblical teaching, and spiritual understanding is often shallow. Syncretism—blending old customs with Christian elements—is common. Yet, they have many who are strong Christians who faithfully follow the Lord.

What Are Their Needs?

The Beginci need better access to education and healthcare, as many villages are remote and lack basic services. Economic opportunities are limited, and families often rely on subsistence farming. Roads and infrastructure are poor, making travel and trade difficult.
