The Maroangin-Bungin people live in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and speak a language belonging to the Austronesian family. Historically, they have been part of the Bugis cultural sphere, known for their maritime traditions and strong social structures. Their history reflects centuries of adaptation to coastal and inland environments, with influences from trade and Islamic expansion shaping their cultural identity. Despite modernization, they maintain distinct traditions tied to their heritage.
The Maroangin-Bungin people primarily work as farmers and fishermen. Rice cultivation is common, along with crops such as maize and vegetables. Fishing provides both food and income, especially for those living near coastal areas. Homes are typically built from wood with tin or thatched roofs, and family life is close-knit, with extended relatives often living nearby. Meals center around rice, fish, and vegetables, flavored with local spices. Celebrations include weddings, harvest festivals, and Islamic holidays, marked by communal meals, music, and traditional dance.
The Maroangin-Bungin people are Muslim, and Islamic practices shape daily life. Prayer, fasting during Ramadan, and observance of Islamic festivals are central to their faith. While Islam is dominant, some cultural traditions persist alongside religious practices, especially in rural areas. There is little exposure to the gospel, and few followers of Christ among them.
Access to quality education and healthcare remains limited, particularly in rural communities. Economic opportunities beyond farming and fishing are scarce, leading to migration of younger generations to urban centers. Spiritually, the Maroangin-Bungin people have little opportunity to hear about Jesus Christ, and there is a need for workers who can share the gospel in culturally appropriate ways while addressing practical needs.
Pray for the Maroangin-Bungin people to have opportunities to hear and understand the message of Jesus Christ.
Ask God to send workers who will live among them and demonstrate His love through word and deed.
Pray for Maroangin-Bungin family leaders and imams to have dreams of the victorious Christ.
Intercede for economic development that provides sustainable livelihoods without eroding cultural identity.
