The Itneg people live in the northwestern part of the Filipino island of Luzon. They have a subgroup called the Banaos.
The Banaos Itneg people grow rice in the traditional way. They do not use modern farm equipment. Along with rice, their staple, they eat corn, mango, banana, coconut, yams and vegetables. Pigs, chickens, wild game and fish provide meat to their diet.
The closest thing to a class of people is the shaman. Other than that, rich and poor are not separated by very much since they don’t have many possessions. Through hard work one can gain more wealth. Their leaders are selected by age and wisdom.
They are known for their tattoos. Tattoos are common for both sexes.
The Banaos Itneg people tend to marry distant relatives. A girl is selected for a boy when he is six years old, and there is a bride price. There is a minimal celebration at the wedding, and guests leave when the ceremony is finished.
They have two types of homes. The first has 2-3 rooms and a front porch. The second is more modest, having only one room and a porch. They use wood and bamboo for flooring.
The Banaos Itneg believe in life after death and a creator god named Kadaklan. Therefore, they have some redemptive beliefs that coincide with the Bible. But they also believe in other spirits and gods.
The Banaos Itneg need to place Jesus Christ at the top of their priority list. He needs to be King of kings and Lord of lords in their families and communities.
