Introduction / History

The Banka people, a small ethnic group in Mali, have lived in the southwestern region for generations. They trace their ancestry to the broader Mandé cultural group, sharing linguistic and historical ties with other Mandé-speaking communities. Despite external pressures from colonialism, migration and the spread of Islam, the Banka have maintained their distinct identity, preserving their language and traditions through the centuries.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Banka people primarily engage in subsistence farming, cultivating crops such as millet, sorghum and maize. Agriculture forms the backbone of their daily life, with communal work in the fields fostering strong social bonds. In addition to farming, they raise livestock, including goats and cattle, which play an essential role in their economy and social standing. The Banka live in small, close-knit villages, where extended families share compounds. Their homes, constructed from mud bricks and thatch, are adapted to the region's climate and environmental conditions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Banka people practice a blend of Islam and traditional animist beliefs. While Islam shapes much of their religious life, traditional practices related to ancestor worship and the veneration of natural spirits remain influential. Rituals and ceremonies, often linked to the agricultural calendar, reflect their belief in the interconnectedness of the spiritual and physical worlds.

What Are Their Needs?

The Banka face several significant challenges, including limited access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities. Their remote location further isolates them from broader Malian society, making it difficult to access essential services. Development initiatives that respect their cultural practices while addressing these needs are crucial. Enhanced educational opportunities, improved healthcare access, and support for sustainable agricultural practices would greatly improve their quality of life and future prospects.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to show himself far more powerful than any other spirit to the Banka people.
Pray for signs and wonders to take place and that this would testify of the power and authority of the name of Jesus.
Pray for wisdom in discipleship with rapid multiplication of disciples and house churches.
Pray for bold, compassionate workers to be sent to them.
Pray for revival to spread through Banka communities, transforming them by the love of Christ.
