Introduction / History

The Waura are a First Nations people living exclusively near Piyulaga Lake in Brazil’s state of Mato Grosso. The Waura are closely related to the nearby Mehinako tribe. Both tribes have ancestors who came to their current location as early as the 800s.
Though the Waura are a very small tribe, they speak their own language, Waura. Some also speak Portuguese, the trade language of Brazil.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Waura people are known for their arts and crafts: feathered ritual masks, baskets and pottery.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though there is a Roman Catholic element to their spirituality, most Waura are shamanistic. They have three groups of shamans, who are responsible for both the spiritual and physical well-being of their people.

What Are Their Needs?

The Waura people need to adapt to a changing world. They will eventually need education in new areas. This will take them out of their comfort zone.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to provide protection and mercy for the Waura people of Brazil.
Pray for members of the Waura tribe who love the Lord to teach Christ to others.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move among the Waura people this decade, providing them with a hope and a purpose.
