The Tunjung Dayak are one of the Dayak peoples living mainly in East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. They are closely related to other Dayak groups culturally and linguistically. Historically, they lived in longhouse communities along rivers, practicing subsistence farming, hunting, and gathering forest products. Over time, many Tunjung have moved into smaller family homes, but they still maintain strong ties to their traditional lands and local customs.
Most Tunjung families depend on farming, especially rice cultivation. Some also grow vegetables, fruit, and cash crops or collect forest products such as rattan and resin. Men often work in agriculture, forestry, or small-scale trade, while women manage the home, prepare food, and help with planting and harvesting. Families tend to be close-knit, and elders have an important role in community decision-making.
Tunjung communities celebrate traditional ceremonies tied to the agricultural cycle, life transitions, and ancestral customs. Food typically includes rice, forest vegetables, fish, and meat gathered or hunted locally. Many families cook over wood fires and prepare meals communally during festivals.
Many Tunjung people follow a form of traditional Dayak religion that focuses on spirits, ancestors, and the balance between the natural and spiritual worlds. Ritual specialists often lead ceremonies for planting, harvest, healing, or protection. Some Tunjung identify as Christian, but traditional practices remain significant in daily life and in major events. Christian influence is present in parts of the region, yet older beliefs and customs continue to shape worldview, community identity, and moral values.
The Tunjung Dayak need continued access to reliable healthcare, clean water, and sustainable economic opportunities. Some areas face challenges from environmental changes and limited infrastructure. Spiritually, they need greater exposure to the teachings of Christ in ways that respect their language and culture. They also need more resources—such as Scripture and discipleship materials—in forms that are accessible to their communities.
Pray that Tunjung families will experience God's peace and blessing in their daily lives and community traditions. May they be drawn to Christ.
Pray for improved healthcare, clean water systems, and sustainable farming options in Tunjung communities.
Pray that followers of Jesus will have wisdom and cultural sensitivity as they build relationships with the Tunjung.
Pray for the development of culturally meaningful Christian resources in the Tunjung language.
