Introduction / History

The Telefol, (AKA, Feramin) is an indigenous people living in the remote mountain regions of Sandaun Province and nearby parts of Western Province in Papua New Guinea. Their communities are found particularly in the Telefomin District and surrounding valleys near the headwaters of the Sepik River. The people are closely identified with the Telefol language, a Papuan language belonging to the Ok language family within the larger Trans–New Guinea linguistic grouping. Feramin represent a southern dialect community of the Telefol language area. Over many generations these mountain communities have maintained their identity through strong clan relationships, village traditions, and the continued use of their language. Geographic isolation created by rugged mountains and dense forests has helped preserve both the language and many aspects of their traditional way of life. The Telefol language remains the primary means of communication within the community, although many people also use Tok Pisin when interacting with neighboring groups or traveling beyond their local region.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Telefol villages are typically located in highland valleys and mountainous terrain. Families depend largely on subsistence gardening, cultivating staple crops in gardens cleared from forested slopes. Hunting, gathering forest products, and raising pigs also contribute to household life and community celebrations.

Village life is strongly centered on extended families and clan networks. Cooperation between relatives is essential for planting gardens, constructing homes, organizing community events, and supporting one another in times of need. Footpaths connect villages across the mountain landscape, allowing travel for trade, family visits, and church gatherings.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all Telefol people identify with Christianity, and churches are active in many villages. Christian worship, teaching, and fellowship are part of community life and provide opportunities for believers to gather for prayer and instruction from the scriptures.

In earlier generations, traditional beliefs involving spiritual forces and unseen influences shaped how people understood events such as illness or misfortune. In some places these ideas are still remembered or influence cultural perspectives. Continued biblical teaching and discipleship remain important so that believers grow in a clear understanding of the gospel and the saving work of Jesus Christ alone.

Portions of Scripture and the New Testament are available in the Telefol language, helping believers read and hear God's word in their own language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Telefol people benefit from ongoing discipleship that strengthens believers in their understanding of Scripture and their daily walk with Christ. Local congregations grow stronger when pastors and church leaders receive encouragement and biblical training.

Access to scripture and Christian teaching resources in the Telefol language helps families and churches engage deeply with God's Word. Opportunities to mentor younger believers and develop new leaders will also help ensure that the church continues to grow in spiritual maturity and faithful witness among the Telefol and neighboring peoples.

Because many villages are in remote mountain areas, improvements in education, healthcare, and transportation can also contribute to the well-being of families and communities.

Prayer Items

Pray that Telefol believers will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a deep love for the word of God.
Pray for pastors and church leaders to be strengthened with wisdom and faithfulness as they shepherd their congregations.
Pray that families and young people will follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and build strong Christian homes.
Pray that the churches among the Telefol will remain united and active in sharing the gospel with neighboring peoples.
