Introduction / History

The Taungyo people speak a nonstandard variety of Burmese. They live within southern Shan State, Myanmar, in the townships of Kalaw and Pinlon.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They are fishermen and agriculturalists. The Taungyo live intermingled with people of other ethnicities but still maintain themselves as a separate group. The men dress in typical Myanmar fashion, but the women have a distinctive dress. They wear lots of silver on their earrings and bracelets and heavy brass rings on their legs. Before they are married, they wear them around their ankles and afterwards they wear them just below their knee.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all the Taungyo people are Buddhists. Some outreach is being done among them by local evangelists and missionaries from other people groups within Myanmar.

What Are Their Needs?

Since the Taungyo people speak a nonstandard variety of Burmese, they may not like seeing their language in print. However, audio and video evangelistic materials in the Taungyo language may be very effective.
