Introduction / History

The Southern Puget are Coast Salish people native to Washington's Puget Sound, traditionally speaking Lushootseed and relying on salmon, shellfish, camas, and cedar. Disease from early explorers devastated their population, but they preserved their identity through cultural practices despite ongoing land and resource conflicts. Today, they focus on environmental stewardship, salmon restoration, and cultural preservation amid modern development.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Basket weaving, carving, and storytelling are key traditions. Annual canoe journeys across Puget Sound strengthen youth identity and intertribal bonds. Tribal enterprises such as casinos, hotels, and tourism support jobs and fund healthcare, education, housing, and elder services. Their government serves members on and off the reservation. Education offers leadership and cultural studies, while healthcare blends traditional healing and modern care. Community pride is maintained through events like powwows, canoe journeys, and cultural festivals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Southern Puget Sound tribes blend Coast Salish spirituality, Christianity introduced in the 1900s, and the Native Shaker Church—a unique local movement combining Christian and indigenous beliefs. Combined ceremonies consist of First Salmon, spirit songs and dances alongside Christian services, sacraments, and hymns. Healing combines shamanic healing and vision quests for spirit power with clergy-led prayer. Their values surround respect for nature, spirit, power, and salmon alongside faith in God and Jesus' teachings which includes moral discipline of no alcohol or gambling.

Due to the strong spiritual traditions of the Native Shaker Church and the Salish tribes, evangelism from nearby Christian ministries, such as Youth With A Mission, tends to be sensitive emphasizing service, friendship and practical support rather than evangelism.

What Are Their Needs?

Affordable housing remains a challenge, especially for tribal members living off-reservation or in urban areas. Access to holistic healthcare that includes mental health, addiction recovery, and traditional healing. As tribes are co-managers of fish and water systems, they need resources for habitat restoration and pollution in the Southern Sound.
